BentallGreenOak Appoints Paul Mouchakkaa as a Managing Partner in the Firm’s Investment Management Business

Toronto (March 23, 2020) — BentallGreenOak (“BGO”) is pleased to announce that Paul Mouchakkaa will be joining BGO as a Managing Partner, effective June 1, 2020.

Paul has been Managing Investment Director and Head of Real Assets at the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (”CalPERS”) since 2015. In this role, Paul has had responsibility and authority for CalPERS’ $43.5B USD real assets portfolio; which includes nearly $37B USD in top tier commercial real estate assets and $5.5B USD in Infrastructure assets located across the U.S., as well as in Europe, Asia and the Americas.

During Paul’s leadership of the real assets group, he successfully implemented a new strategic plan focusing on core assets which brought the real assets portfolio back to its important role of long-term value creation. The core real estate portfolio resulted in consistent outperformance of the benchmark and totaled approximately $30B USD of equity commitments. Further, Paul established a new business model for execution in Infrastructure leading to $4B USD in new investment, and disposed of nearly $8B USD in non-strategic assets. And very importantly, he incorporated best-in-class ESG metrics into all facets of CalPERS real assets program.

Prior to this role at CalPERS, Paul was Managing Director and Global Head of Real Estate Research and Strategy for Morgan Stanley from 2011-2015. In that capacity, Paul worked closely with the CIO and Regional Business Heads to shape global investment themes, recommend strategies, preferred markets and tactical opportunities for investment or dispositions.

Paul also worked at Pension Consulting Alliance (“PCA”) and as a Portfolio Manager at CalPERS.

As a Managing Partner at BGO, Paul will lead the Canadian Investment Management team, which is responsible for a $24B CAD diversified real estate portfolio (as of December 31, 2019) made on behalf of 140 Canadian and global investors. Paul will also play a senior role in BGO’s global strategy, portfolio management and investor relations. He will work with BGO’s regional teams in North America, Europe and Asia to strengthen and build relationships with top global investors.

Paul will report to Gary Whitelaw, BGO’s CEO, and will be a member of BentallGreenOak’s Canadian Management Committee and Global Coordination Committee.

Paul was born in Ottawa, Canada and has worked in Toronto, Old Greenwich, Los Angeles, and Sacramento. He is an Honours Economics graduate of Carleton University in Ottawa and holds an MBA majoring in Finance from the University of Oregon.
